2018-2019 Year-end Report – Urbandale J-Hawk Bands

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENTAWARD
The Iowa High School Music Association has awarded its Distinguished Academic Achievement Awardto the following Urbandale High School Bands for the Fall 2018 semester.
Marching Band: 3.401 GPA

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC DEPARTMENT
As a whole, students of the instrumental music department gave over 30 public performances throughout the school year.

CONCERT BAND
The Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band each performed 3 local concerts while the Wind Symphony performed 7 concerts in Iowa and Missouri and all groups performed at State Large Group held at Indianola High School in May. In 2019, the Wind Symphony earned a Division “I” rating; this is Wind Ensemble’s 27^thDivision “I” rating in the past 28 years.

MARCHING BAND
The 172-member J-Hawk Marching Band is UCSD’s largest single performing ensemble. They proudlyperformed at all home games, three regional festivals and in September of 2018 hosted the 21^stAnnual Urbandale Marching Invitational. The band received a “Division I” rating at State Marching Contest, its 35^thin a row. They also performed, as they do each year, at the Urbandale Independence Day Parade and Homecoming Parade.

JAZZ BAND
The Jazz Bands performed at 4 local concerts and 3 regional contests. In February of 2019, they hosted the 16^thAnnual Urbandale Jazz Colloquium – a non-competitive jazz festival with 15 visiting bands from several different Iowa schools. In addition to formal concerts and contests, the jazz bands also performed at several community events such as elementary school assemblies.

SOLO AND CHAMBER ENSEMBLE FESTIVALS RESULTS
On February 16, 2019, Urbandale High School Instrumental Music Department entered 112 events into the Perry Band Olympics Solo & Small Ensemble Contest. Performing alongside students from across the state of Iowa, Urbandale’s students earned 65 Division-I ratings. The following students were further highlighted against nearly 1000 other entries with these “podium finishes” within their respective categories:

ALL-STATE BAND AND ORCHESTRA
On Saturday, Oct. 20^thUrbandale High School had 19 students audition for the Iowa Instrumental All-State Festival. Statewide over 1000 instrumental student-musicians audition and approximately 17% of the candidates are selected to participate in the All-State Music Festival in Ames, Iowa on Nov. 16-17, 2018. These Urbandale students were among those selected:

South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association (SCIBA) District Honor Band
On November 29, 2018 Urbandale High School had 26 students audition for the South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association (SCIBA) Honor Band. 10 students were selected for participation:

IOWA BANDMASTER’S AWARD OF MERIT
Senior, Katherine “Kit” Stoelk was awarded the Iowa Bandmaster’s Award of Merit for her musical achievement, work ethic and service to the organization over the course of her entire tenure in high school band.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG JAZZ AWARD
Senior, Alec Albrecht was awarded the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award for his contributions, achievement, and study of jazz music.

VARSITY LETTER WINNERS
Each year band students have the opportunity to earn a Varsity Letter in band by participating in numerous optional performance and educational opportunities. In 2019, 86 band students, or 52%, earned a Varsity Letter.
